2-wheeler sales soar in August

The country’s top two-wheeler maker Hero Honda Motors today said its motorcycle sales improved 6.1 per cent in August to 1,45,730 units as against 1,37,264 units sold in the same month a year ago.

Cumulative (April-August 2003) sales grew by 7.5 per cent to 7,47,660 units against 6,95,305 units a year ago, a company statement said. The sales in August were higher by 1.8 per cent over July sales (1,43,141 units).

Hero Honda’s closest rival Bajaj Auto said its two-wheeler sales grew around two per cent in the month at 98,175 units as against 96,317 sold in August 2002.

Motorcycle sales grew by 16.8 per cent year-on-year to 76,487 units from 65,475 units, a company statement said. Sales of three-wheelers went up by 9.1 per cent to 19,601 units, it added.

TVS Motor recorded sales of 101,320 units in August, clocking an 8 per cent increase over the figure achieved last year (94,232 units), in the same period.

Its motorcycles sales in August grew 6 per cent at 62,234 units compared with 58,636 units sold in the same period last year. TVS’ scooter (sub-100 cc category) sales for August stood at 17,446 units compared with 14,293 units sold last year in the same period, achieving a growth of 22 per cent. Further growth in this segment is expected.

The country’s fourth largest motorcycle maker, LML said its motorcycle sales in August improved 126.5 per cent to 15,496 units from 6,843 sold in the same month a year ago.
