DaimlerChrysler India Mercedes-Benz new
E class (Oct. 2002) - The new E Class Mercedes
Benz, the E 240 petrol, has been launched in India within nine months
of its debut in Europe. Priced at Rs 33.9 lakh, ex showroom, Mumbai.
With the launch of the new E Class model, DaimlerChrysler India
(DCIL) will phase out the W 210 series.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor Camry (Oct.
2002) - The Camry model is the sixth generation of the model
which was first launched in 1983. The car has been priced at Rs
18.45 lakh for V3 model while the V1 model has been priced at Rs
17.95 lakh. The V3 model has leather upholstery while V1 has fabric
upholstery. The 2.4 litre engine has a four-speed manual transmission
and electronically-controlled suspension. It is equipped with advanced
collision safety body as well as dual stage supplemental restraint
system airbags for the front seats and curtain shield airbags for
the rear seats.

Hyundai Accent Viva (Aug. 2002)
- Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) has launched Viva, a sporty
1599 cc, semi-notchback version of its mid-size car ‘Accent’ priced
at Rs 6.80 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The ‘Accent Viva’ is the fifth
variant of the car after ‘GLS’, ‘GLX’, ‘GVS’ and ‘Tornado’ variants
being manufactured at HMIL. The new model has features like anti-lock
braking system, alloy wheels, collapsible steering column, rear
defogger and adjustable driving seat. Accent Viva has maximum horsepower
(ps/rpm) 102.6/5800 and maximum torque (kgm/rpm) 14.4/4500 with
rack & pinion with power assist steering system. Exclusive Viva
features include ABS, 14” aluminium alloy wheels, leather wrapped
steering wheel, leather wrapped TGS Knob with chrome insert, audio
with remote and rear wiper & washer.

Mahindra Scorpio (June. 2002)
- Mahindra & Mahindra launched its sports utility vehicle
"Scorpio" after investing Rs 600 crore in its design and
development over the last five years. The Scorpio is available with
diesel and petrol engine options. The 2.6 petrol engine, equipped
with a turbocharged engine costs Rs 5.5 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai
price of Euro I version) while the fully loaded 2.6 DX model with
diesel engine is available for Rs 6.10 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai
price). The diesel engine has been developed in-house in collaboration
with AVL, Austria. The petrol version, whose engine is sourced from
Renault costs Rs.7.07 lakh in Mumbai.

Car Models Phased Out
Maruti 1000 & Gypsy 1000 - Maruti Udyog Ltd (MUL) has
discontinued two of its models - Maruti 1000 and Gypsy 1000 - as
part of efforts to ``rationalise'' product range. The models, powered
by a 1000 cc engine, have been discontinued after the company decided
not to upgrade the powertrains to meet existing emission norms.
WagonR VX - MARUTI Udyog has discontinued
production of the top-end version of its latest offering Wagon R
VX and is introducing two new variants of the car featuring power-steering
as standard fitment.
Matiz SE and SP
- Daewoo Motors introduced two new variants of Matiz - SG and SA
- which have replaced the existing Matiz SE and SP models. The new
versions have added features like power steering and factory-fitted
anti-theft device.
Ford Escort - Ford India has decided
not to resume production of the popular Escort model and instead
launch a new version of the Ford Ikon with the 1.3 litre Endura
Engine. Ford officials said that this decision is part of a world-wide
strategy to phase out Ford Escort as "the car has run out of
its life cycle".
