The Automotive Research Association of India


The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), Pune was incorporated as a corporate body in 1966 as an Industrial Research Organisation formed by the Indian Automotive Industry, affiliated to the Ministry of Industry, Government of India. It has expanded over the last thirty two years both in terms of Research & Development, Homologation & Certification and Service of competence with various modern facilities to assist the Industry.

About ARAI:
The Automotive Research Association of India, (ARAI) is located in picturesque surroundings in the western part of Pune. The 105 hectares (263 acres) of land houses various laboratories, test facilities spread over 8343 sq.m. area. It is well connected by air, rail and road about 25 kms from Pune Airport and 12 kms from the railway station.

The Institute has been set up by the Indian Vehicle and automotive ancillary manufacturers and the (Government of India), Ministry of Industry, as a co-operative industrial research body to provide services to the industry in the fields of applied research and product development in automotive engineering consisting of the following areas :

  • Product design and development
  • Automotive equipment and ancillary evaluation
  • Mandatory and developmental testing for emissions and components including safety.
  • Standardisation and dissemination of technical information.

    The Institute is registered as a Society under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. Almost all the vehicle manufacturers and major ancillary manufacturers are members of the Institute. The activities of the organisation are controlled by the "Governing Council" with members from Industry and the Government of India.

    It has established major R & D facilities in service to the Indian Automotive Industry. These facilities are increasingly utilised for Sponsored, R & D Cess and Plan projects as well as for testing and characterization purposes. ARAI manpower stands at about 290, out of which 180 are qualified engineers and 84 are technicians & tradesmen, and 97 supporting staff. Most of the engineers have been trained abroad in various fields of advanced automotive technology.

    AML : Automotive Materials Laboratory Calibration

    SIAT 2001 conference
    scheduled ARAI, Pune from
    10-13Th. January 2001.

    SIAT 2001 offers an excellent platform for interaction between automotive experts in India and abroad to come together and exchange views. The theme of the conference will focus on “developing technologies forth challenges faced by automotive fraternity in the 21st. century”.
