Tyre Pressures – Do they Matter?

Now how do we go about it!

Actually, it’s not all that difficult, if you apply your mind to it, for –

i) ‘Cold’ obviously means when the Tyres are at the ‘Ambient’ Temperature – ideally the first thing in the morning before one ‘rolls-off’. Now that’s where the crux of the problem lies – for understandable reasons. To overcome this, this is what you can do.

ii) To be able to do so, you need a Tyre Pump and a reliable TP Gauge of your own - as most of the ones at the roadside are out of ‘synch’. If you find a foot pump bit of a bother, there are Car Battery operated ones now available for ~ Rs: 750/- in the market, which plug into the cigarette lighter socket of your vehicle and you could use those.

iii) Similarly, a good/Taiwanese 'dial type' TPG would be around 100/- and the digital/self-calibrating type around Rs: 300/-.

iv) I would strongly recommend that you buy a tyre pressure guage of your own - either the dial type or the digital type - whichever suits your liking and budget.

v) Armed with this, you could also fill-up air at any pump and always check with your TP guage. What one can do and it works out fine is that at a pump nearest to one's home, you get the your tyres’ Pressures ‘corrected’ to, say. (+) 10% per ‘your Gauge’.

vi) Once home, the next morning before rolling off, you check again with the same Gauge and let off the excess pressure - if at all there.

vii) Remember that under-inflated Tyres by as little as 4 psi can raise your fuel consumption by as much as 6% - besides seriously jeopardizing their lives and thus your safety!
