LASALLE
That larger-than-life Californian stylist Harley Earl had his
first great success for General Motors with the 1927 LaSalle,
launched as a lower-priced running mate for Cadillac. Created
in the image of the Hispano-Suiza, the LaSalle had a 5-litre
V8. In common with the other GM marques, LaSalle acquired safety
glass, chrome plate and synchromesh in 1929.
By 1930, the LaSalle was powered by a 5.8-litre engine, having
passed through 5.4 and 5.6-litre versions in the interim.
In 1934, LaSalle reiterated its role as the GM style leader
by pioneering the controversial turret-top styling; it also
acquired a straight-eight engine, though a V8 reappeared in
1937.
By this time the LaSalle was sharing bodyshells with Buick and
Oldsmobile and no longer had anything special to offer; production
ended in 1940.
