1967-1973 Fiat 125

FIAT was founded in 1899 by Giovanni Agnelli and his friends. The name FIAT is an abbreviation of Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino (Factory of Italian Automobiles at Turin) known simply as "Fiat" since 1906.

The Fiat 124 and 125 were produced between 1967 and 1973.

The Fiat 124 was unveiled in March 1966 at the Geneva Motorshow and won "Car of the Year" in 1967. It had a new four cylinder, 1197cc, 60 bhp engine. Approximately 1,543,000 saloons and estates were built in Italy, before it was replaced in Italy in 1974 by the Fiat 131/132 4-door sedan, although production in other countries continued. Worldwide around 4 million Fiat 124s were produced. A factory at Togliattigrad in the erstwhile USSR produced 2000 Fiat 124 cars per day, named Lada 124. Other producers were Spain (Seat), Turkey (Tofas), South Africa and Yugoslavia. It was also assembled in Germany, Poland (FSO-FIAT), Bulgaria, Ireland, Malaysia, Morocco, Portugal, India (Premier 118 NE with an lacklustre Nissan Sunny engine) and some South American countries.

The Fiat 125 was an improvement on the 124. There were two models a base Fiat 125N (Normale) and an upper model Fiat 125S (Speciale) which was introduced in 1968.

The 125 models housed a heart that exuded character. The base model Fiat 125N had a twin cam DOHC 1597 cc engine that developed 90 BHP like a Daewoo Nexia.

The Fiat 125S had an aggressive 100 bhp@6400 rpm engine mated to a five-speed gearbox -- a combination that propelled its 5 passengers with luggage from 0-100 km/h in 11.2 sec and topped out at 170 km/h. Not compromising safety for speed, the Fiat 125 family had servo- power assisted disc brakes on all four wheels.

Its extremely low price, high power and plentiful "no extra cost" standard features made it stand out against its competition. 33 years ago the Fiat buyer got: Power assisted disc brakes on all four wheels, windscreen washer, windscreen wipers with interval timer(first time in the world), interior mirror with day-night anti-glare position, central armrest for the rear seat, reading lights for the rear seat, lockable and lighted glove compartment, central console, reclining front seats, reflectors in all doors, child safeguard at the rear doors, reversing light, trip odometer, electric clock, cigarette lighter, dimmable dashboard lights, lighted engine and luggage compartments.

Extra cost options were: Alloy wheels, leather seats, sliding roof, semi-automatic transmission, tachometer, airconditioning and rear window with electric demister.
