1956 Studebaker Commander

"Studebaker"! This was a very famous brand of American car for 114 years from 1852 to 1966. Their motto was, "Always give more than you promise."

Post Second World War, Studebaker was the first American auto company to come out with radically different styling from the prewar designs.

The 1956 models broke away in styling from the 1953-55 low slung Raymond Loewy design. For 1956, Studebaker featured a squarer look announced by large mesh-filled grilles.

The lowest priced model was the 3041 cc, 101 bhp, 6-cylinder Studebaker Champion. The next model upmarket was the Studebaker Commander. The Commander had a 4248 cc V8 that developed 170 bhp with a two barrel carburetor and 185 bhp with the four barrel carburetor option. Top of the line with fancy chrome piping and two-tone paint jobs was the President. It had a 4736 cc V8 that developed 195 bhp with a two barrel carburetor and a whopping 210 bhp with the four barrel.

All three models were offered in two-door "sedanet", four door sedan and two-door station wagon (estate car) versions.

The station wagon versions of Champion, Commander and President were called Pelham, Parkview and Pinehurst respectively.
