The
Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company Limited
The
Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company Limited
(TATA Engineering) was incorporated on September 1, 1945, at Jamshedpur
when TATA SONS took over "Singhbhum Shops" from the erstwhile East India
Railways to produce locomotives and general engineering equipment.
In 1954, the Company embarked on the manufacture of Diesel Commercial
Vehicles at Jamshedpur under a 15-year technical and financial collaboration
ended in 1969, TATA Engineering not only became an independent producer
of medium commercial vehicles with a negligible import content, but
had also developed the capability of fully designing and manufacturing
these vehicles in-house.
The
Pune Works was started in 1965 with the acquisition of the Investa Machine
Tool Company in the Pimpri-Chinchwad Industrial belt, about 20 kms from
Pune.
The Company's head office is located in Mumbai. It has three major plants
at Jamshedpur, Pune and Lucknow (started in 1992). A fourth plant at
Dharwad has recently been restructured to operate as two distinct business
units - one for commercial vehicles and the other for passenger cars.
TATA
Engineering is India's largest and the World's sixth largest manufacturer
of commercial vehicles. The Company, today, commands over two-third
market share in the medium, heavy and light commercial vehicle segment
and close to a fourth in the multi-utility segment. TATA Engineering
also emerged as India's second largest passenger car manufacturer in
the last financial year, achieving a sale of 82,836 passenger cars and
utilty vehicles. The TATA Indica acquired a market share of 8.8% in
the first full year of launch. A total of 199,115 vehicles (both commercial
vehicles and passenger cars) have been sold by the Company in 1999-2000.
Over
the years, TATA Engineering has been very conscious of its responsibility
to the environment and the communities around its manufacturing plants.
It has ensured that all effluents are fully treated, and has made great
investments on its vehicles to ensure that emission levels meet or better
mandated norms. The Company has consciously decided to lead the domestic
industry in complying with international emission standards. TATA Engineering
is amongst the first companies in the auto sector to introduce the stringent
Euro I and Euro II norms well ahead of the mandated dates and, today,
its entire passenger car and multi-utility vehicle range is Bharat Stage
II (Euro II) compliant. The Company has invested in a joint venture
with Cummins (the global leader in diesel engine technology) in a pioneering
effort proactively designed to ensure state-of-the-art engine and emission
control technology for its commercial vehicle range in India.
Tata
Engineering is committed to maximising customer satisfaction and strives
to achieve the goal of excellence through development, manufacture and
sale of reliable, safe, cost-effective, quality products and services
of international standards using environmentally sustainable technologies
for improving levels of efficiency and productivity within its plants
and ancillaries. TATA Engineering also has a commitment towards
improving the quality of life of its employees, both within and outside
its plants and offices, through improved work practices and social welfare
schemes.
Tata Engineering has won the national technology
award for successful commercialisation of indigenous technology for
its small car Indica. The award, carries a silver shield and a cash
prize of Rs 10 lakhs.
